About WIRE, & how a dispatch gets filed
What Folio42 Is
Folio42 is a web directory organized on the model of a library card catalog. Each listing is a card: it carries the domain name, a short descriptive annotation, and a direct link to the source site. The catalog is arranged across 22 subject collections, from the Games & Wagering Stacks to the Wayfarers Holdings, covering the broad range of what the open web contains.
How the Catalog Works
Folio42 is built around the submitted card, not the crawled index. When someone submits a site, the catalog creates a record immediately — domain, title, descriptive note, and collection assignment. There are no automated rankings and no pay-to-feature placements. The order within each collection is chronological, newest first, like a properly maintained accession log.
The 22 Collections
The catalog is divided into 22 subject collections, each covering a distinct area of the web. The Open Stacks is the largest, holding entries that do not fit neatly under a single specialist heading. Smaller collections — like Records & Documents Holdings or Property & Realty Collection — cover narrower but important subject areas. Every collection accepts new filings through the submission desk at /add.php.
Who Can File a Card
Anyone with a legitimate web site can file a card in Folio42. The submission form asks for a URL and a collection assignment; the catalog handles the rest, fetching the site title and description automatically. Filing is free, has always been free, and will remain free. Folio42 does not take payment for placement, featured position, or expedited review.
